Probability axioms

A probability PP on a sample space Ω\Omega satisfies non-negativity, P(Ω)=1P(\Omega)=1, and countable additivity for disjoint events.

P1

Two-event inclusion–exclusion

If A,BA,B are events, prove P(AB)=P(A)+P(B)P(AB)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B).

Solution · P1
  1. Write ABA\cup B as a disjoint union of ABA\setminus B, BAB\setminus A, and ABA\cap B.
  2. Apply finite additivity and rewrite using P(A)=P(AB)+P(AB)P(A)=P(A\setminus B)+P(A\cap B) (and same for BB).
